A World of Stories on Stage
Cải lương is Vietnamese opera—storytelling through singing, acting, dialogue, music, and movement. Its stories can draw from history and legend, romance and family, or contemporary life.
From elaborate historical and Hồ Quảng productions to intimate stories set in modern life, cải lương encompasses a remarkably varied theatrical world.

The Performance Happens in the Moment
We Perform Live
Our performers sing, speak, act, and bring their characters to life onstage.
Depending on the production, Tình Tri Âm performs with live musicians or with specially arranged instrumental accompaniment. In either case, the singing, dialogue, acting, and movement you experience from our performers are live.
Some productions require months of rehearsal, carefully coordinated music and movement, and elaborate costumes created for the roles. The preparation may happen long before the curtain rises, but the performance itself happens in the moment—between the artists and the audience.
A Connection Between Kindred Spirits
Tình Tri Âm
Tình Tri Âm describes a profound connection between people who deeply understand and resonate with one another.
For us, that connection happens through performance.
It can happen between artists sharing the stage, between a performer and a character, or between the stage and someone in the audience who feels the joy, pain, humor, or longing of the story.
Through music, singing, acting, and storytelling, we hope to create that moment of connection—even for someone encountering cải lương for the very first time.

Looking forward
A Living Tradition
Traditions remain alive when people continue to learn them, perform them, experience them, and pass them forward.
Tình Tri Âm creates opportunities for audiences to experience cải lương live while giving performers the time and space to continue developing their craft.
We aim to produce at least two Tình Tri Âm shows each year, perform at cultural and community events, reach audiences beyond the San Francisco Bay Area, document our work professionally, and create opportunities for the next generation to encounter and learn this art form.
